Weather guide

How the forecasts are made

Forecasts come from the Open-Meteo service, which combines several numerical weather models and picks the best one for each place and time range. Every town page asks for the forecast at its exact coordinates and elevation.

Reading the symbols

Each symbol sums up the sky for the period: sun, clouds, rain, snow, fog or thunderstorms. The rain figure is the amount expected over the day, the percentage its probability.

Wind: direction and strength

Every page shows wind speed, gusts and direction, live and hour by hour. On the wind map, an arrow shows where the wind is coming from and its colour the strength: the bolder the colour, the stronger the wind. A gust well above the average speed signals gusty, harder-to-predict wind.

Rain probability, not just the amount

The percentage next to each time slot shows the probability of rain at that spot, not the amount expected: a high percentage with few millimetres points to light but near-certain rain, a middling percentage with many millimetres to a less certain but potentially heavy shower. Always read the two figures together.

Hour by hour or 14 days?

The first 48 hours are the most reliable: use them to plan a day. Beyond five days, read the forecast as a trend — warmer or cooler, wetter or drier.

Air quality and UV

The European air quality index goes from good to very poor and is computed from fine particles and ozone. The UV index is the daily maximum: protection is advised from 3.

Alerts on your page

When an official alert is active for your region, a banner appears at the top of the town page, with its level (yellow, orange, red) and validity period. Click it to see the detail of the phenomenon announced; with no banner, no alert is currently active.

Comparing to the seasonal normal

Every town page includes a line saying whether the day looks warmer, cooler or normal compared with the 1991–2020 average for the current month. It's a quick way to tell whether a warm or cold spell is unusual for the season.

The 7-day table at a glance

The table sums up each day with a symbol, a minimum and a maximum, and the expected rainfall. Handy for planning the week; for a precise moment, open that day's hour-by-hour page for more detail.
